Middle of the Night Memories

It's 4 AM.  I woke around 3 AM, after falling asleep around 1 AM, with a very uncomfortable little Rue fussing at me.

We've been dealing with the dreaded first fever, & I am running on an average 2-4 hours of sleep a night.  Sometimes, I have to think back to when I was carrying this little bundle & looking so forward to mamahood.  I have to think back before the fatigue, the breast-milk stained everything, the painful physical changes, the actual labor, the anxiety.  I have to remember the calm before the storm.

Our friend Heather gave me some beautiful images to help me remember the excitement.  The hope.  The anticipation.

Despite the sleeplessness, the stress, the moments of "will she ever stop crying?!?!"... it's all worth it!  I know I was born to be Rue's mama.  I have always wanted her, & I will always want her.

And now?  Here is hoping I get a little more sleep tonight!

Vacation 2012: Mountain Air Therapy

This past summer, Bear & I went on vacation with my family to Upstate NY, where my mom's family live.  I had not been to the lake house in almost TEN years... it was lovely!  I cannot express how much I missed the lake & mountains.  We also had the opportunity to meet my cousin's two adorable babies!  Having time to catch up with family is one of the best things in life.  On our way, we stopped off at my mom's reunion for her Parish Mission Team, which meant the world to her.  It was fun to see a bit of my parent's past come alive as well.

The Honeymoon Saga: Day 1

Bear with me.  This may take forever.  I will just pepper these in with normal posts as we go along the road into the future...

It all began with a train ride.  I was super excited, because Bear surprised me with the tickets.  I hate to fly.  I hate being suspended in mid-air in a gigantic metal tube with climate control and pressurized air.  It's just... not natural.  I get vertigo and then in my mind I go through all the horrible ways it could go wrong.  Last time we boarded a plane, a "confused" stow-away in the bathroom was escorted off the plane by security while officials found and confiscated the various plastic bags he had stowed in multiple compartments.  It was terrifying.  So, the gist is, I HATE flying.

BUT my dad is a model train guy, and I grew up going to the occasional train museum or model train convention, and as a hangover of the experience wound up romanticizing the rails myself.  This is something Bear has known for a while.  So he splurged and got us a roomette on the Silver Star.  I was way too excited about it.

We got a lift to Union Station with my dad, and had a couple hours to kill.  We were let into the VIP Lounge, which was pretty awesome and offered the bonus of free coffee.  Some people would sneer at free Folder's from a pot, but I prefer it to Starbucks anyway (although if it had been Dunkin' Donuts coffee I would have been ecstatic!).  There was a plethora of snacks in 100 calorie baggies, too... so naturally, I ate four bags of Goldfish like the sophisticate I am.

Eventually we decided we were hungrier than snacks, and drifted off through the Station to find sustenance.  And we stumbled upon an Uno's.  So we got some pizza and beer (you know, because those things go together).  Our departure was in the afternoon, so I felt a little better about the early beer.

Finally, it was boarding time.  The VIP Lounge was kinda crowded when we returned from lunch, yet we were the only people headed to Orlando.  We found our car, boarded, and began what I felt would be the adventure of a lifetime!  After all, it's the journey rather than the destination, right?

Well, I learned that it is a pain to be a smoker on a smoke-free train that has maybe two smoking stops in 17 hours.  I also learned that the sensation of moving is hard to shake when you leave the train and are back on solid ground.  There was also a fiasco with the rental car once we arrived that wound up costing us almost twice the original quoted price, but... we had our romance on the rails!  The last lesson: bring a good book.  And make sure you have an alternate, in case you get bored with Austen.

Finally, never let boring hours confined to a small space stifle creativity.  Write, read, doodle, photograph, and make it into a music video!

Fells Point

So, the day after the wedding.  A lot of people were hung over.  I've been limiting my alcohol consumption to three drinks a day, and I usually only allow myself to drink anything one day every two weeks, so I wasn't drunk the night before (although I always feel kinda woozy after that initial drink) and I wasn't hung over the next day.  But I WAS sleepy.  See, we all got back to the hotel room and everyone crashed.  Except me.  I stayed up to watch the episode of 30 Rock we accidentally ordered for $5 (they are getting sneaky about paying for TV in hotels, and since we paid, I figured someone ought to watch the whole thing, even though I am not a big fan of awkward comedy).  Then I went outside for a cigarette.  I met up with some of the wedding party, who were after-partying, and talked with them a bit (everyone was in street clothes or still dressed up, while I was in PJ pants and a hoodie... CLASS).  Then this taxi drives up and an honest-to-goodness hooker stumbles out.  There I am with a minor and three gays, and she surveys us and decides that we are, indeed, the perfect group to try and... well, hook.  After an awkward banter, she teetered away leaving us to wonder if that really just happened.  It had.  It still seems surreal.  But, that's the city, I guess.

Anyway, the next morning we all got up and checked out of the hotel with plenty of time to spare, despite daylight savings time jipping us an hour of rest.  We decided it would be a good idea to hang out at Fells Point for a little while before driving the two hours back home.  We hit up a local independently owned record store that reminded me a little bit of Empire Records, not in the way it LOOKED, but in the way it FELT, if that makes any sense.  Then we ate at an Irish pub and had a glass of wine at this little place called V-NO.  We walked around a little bit and then decided to leave.  And guess what?  That day happened to be Baltimore's early St. Patrick's Day parade day.  So traffic was AWFUL and the GPS wanted us to take every road that was closed.  So it took us at least one full hour longer to get home than planned.  I always try to think of these delays as an adventure (we see parts of the city we otherwise wouldn't, maybe we will grow more familiar with the area for future reference...) but Bear and I always manage to run into these awkward sorts of hold-ups, and my optimism doesn't make a long detour home any more charming than it is.

Enough with the words.  Onto the photographs!
