Ruby Dawn: The Beginning

It happened!  On June 22, 6 days after her due date, our baby GIRL was born!  I am just going to type up what I wrote for Rue in her "1000 First Days" book here.  But first, a photo collage of the last month or so of iPhone photos to reward you all for putting up with the silence of my blog!

Ruby Dawn's First Month

And now, the story.

"I thought I was going to have you early, but I was wrong!  Labor technically began 3 days before you were finally born.  Contractions were 15 minutes apart on average from Wednesday until Saturday, June 22, at 11am.  Suddenly, contractions were a mere 2 minutes apart!  Your Daddy had gone to town to run some errands & wouldn't be home for another 15 minutes or more!  I called my mom, who came straight over.  By the time she arrived, I was panicking.  I was in a too-small tee shirt & PJ shorts, clutching a food warmer to my abdomen & crying!  Your grandma calmed me down & you Daddy arrived home.  Soon, we were in the car, headed to the hospital (an hour drive!).  Daddy drove with me in the passenger seat & Grandma behind me.  During a contraction, they both held my hands while Grandma timed them on my labor app on the iPhone.

When we arrived at the hospital, they hooked me up to a fetal monitor to see how you were doing.  As usual, you hated being monitored, & my birth plan was changed from occasional monitoring to full-time monitoring, so they could try to keep tabs on you.  I was put on an IV drip for dehydration, too, but I was also allowed to drink water throughout labor.  I labored about 8 hours unmedicated, until I was 90%+ effaced & 9cm dilated.  Then your vitals went off-line for a long time.

I got an emergency epidural in case we needed to go into surgery for a cesarian.  I kept telling your Daddy how scared I was, how I wanted so badly to birth you free of drugs!  But he reminded me how I could be brave for you.  Despite my phobia of needles, the epidural was safely in place after 2 bouts of very intense contractions (I had to stay perfectly still!).  The drugs were on the lowest setting, but I still was able to fall asleep.

Soon, it was time to push.  I pushed & pushed & couldn't really feel if you were moving down.  A nurse set up a mirror so I could see.  When you crowned- so much hair!- I had to keep you there for a while, stretching me out.  I thought about how they broke my waters & nothing but blood came out.  I was worried that my body was no longer safe for you.  Your head stretched me wide & it hurt- I wanted you out!  Another set of pushes & I saw your face!  It was scrunched & red & it looked like it was in the wrong place, but I didn't have a lot of time to think about it because with one last push you slid into this world.  Your cord had been wrapped around your neck, but the doctor slid it over your head in the moment before you tumbled out of me.  I reached down & grasped you under your arms & pulled you to my chest, feeling your legs side out of my body.

Your Daddy & I cried as you cried & I told you your name, 'Ruby Dawn.'  We marveled at you until your cord stopped pulsing & your placenta was born.  I began to breastfeed you as your Daddy cut your cord.

You were your own person for the first time."

Our labor day was SO busy for the hospital- we were only one laboring couple in the filled up ward... more laboring women had to be set up in other areas of the hospital until one of us birthed our baby & vacated a birthing suite!  Another woman was experiencing the same complications we were, but she was not as severe a case... it was expected that we would need a cesarian or at the very least, foreceps-assisted birth.  Our midwife assisted the lower-risk mother, while we met the OB for the first time.  She was as wonderful as our midwife, & committed to giving us a birth experience as close as possible to what we envisioned.  She sang hilarious songs to Rue as I labored & kept telling the best jokes... it was like being in a comedy club, which really helped me to relax & stave off the panic that I would need surgery.  In the end, I birthed my baby vaginally under my own steam, no assistance needed!

I have never been so tired, so exhilarated, so scared, so sure, & so happy in my life.  Birth is a process, an indoctrination into mamahood.  It isn't easy, the recovery is long & arduous, & the actual event is harrowing & amazing all at once... & it is all worth it.

I am a mama!

May Showers

So I know the expression is that "April showers bring May flowers", but we actually have had the opposite here.  April was full of blooming trees & beautiful flowers sprouting all over our property.  Since May began, we've been having nearly daily thunderstorms!  But some showers are better than others.  Like baby showers.

Look!  Squiggle dropped last week!  Getting close!!!

We had our baby shower the first weekend of May, & combined it with a housewarming (because it makes more sense to ask only one day of people's busy schedules).  It was a success!  So many people came by to wish us well, see the house, design a onesie, & eat some food.  It was a bit of a whirlwind.  We ran the event over a six hour timespan so people could drop in whenever they had time to (again, it is a crazy busy time of year).  It was a very fun day, but incredibly exhausting, too.  Check out the sugar baby on the cake... a friend of our made it!  She stands by the "it's a mold, not terribly impressive" point of view, while I stand by the "holy cow that sugar baby looks like an actual tiny baby & it's blowing my mind" perspective.

Yesterday, I celebrated my first Mother's Day!  I got lots of cuddles & breakfast from Bear.  We had lunch with my parents & dinner with his & got to spend some time with both the moms in our lives, which was nice.  In between those meals, we had a maternity shoot at our house with Heather... I cannot wait to see how the photos all turned out!  I am really excited about a few of them!  When I have them, I will post some of my favorites.  Until then, I asked Bear to snap a sneak peek from a different angle, so I had something to post in the interim.  I think these are the images I have always wanted to immortalize my pregnancy.

We are waiting on our delivery of Ruby Moon diaper detergent to wash all our lovely pre-loved cloth diapers!  My cousin brought down her entire stash from New York, so we added a significant amount of fluff to our growing collection!  I am very excited to get the nursery completely organized & efficient.  Bear & I have already brought in some of our childhood favorites to add some nostalgia & personality to the room.  I will have to get pictures of the space to share here when we are done.  I cannot believe that in ONE MONTH our "Squiggle" will finally be here!  I can't wait to introduce him or her to the world.

Homeowners!

Things have been pretty hectic in our lives... Squiggle's debut is fast approaching (two months... that's it!) & Bear & I have just bought our first home!

Untitled

We spent the past weekend at the new place scrubbing & priming the Pepto-Bismal colored walls (the seller was kind enough to paint most of the rose hues white for us, & even took down the ancient rose print wallpaper from the master room that had begun to shed off the walls like so many dead snake skins).  We bought some subtle shades for the rooms to keep the house mostly bright & white with just hints of color to keep things from being too sterile.

Untitled

The house is on the small side, but I think it is perfect.  It's a tad bit larger than our current apartment, but it has a totally different layout, so it's hard to compare.  The rooms are generally smaller, but there are more of them.  Our dryer vents out of the house, which is a big perk for me, since our current laundry room (which we made out of two closets) does not have a proper vent.  I was thrilled when I ran a load of curtains (conveyed with the house) & the house didn't steam up with the dry cycle!  I also made sure I could run laundry while baby slept in the nursery, & I definitely can.  Which is good to know... with how big this baby is getting to be... who knows how long we actually have before I pop!

Untitled

This weekend, we have enlisted the help of our families & friends to help us make the Great Migration.  This means we have been working all day & packing/cleaning/painting/organizing all evening, passing out for a few hours, waking with the sun & doing it all over again.  I am EXHAUSTED.  But it is totally worth it, & I cannot wait to nest & make our house into our home!  I promise to post some non-phone photos as soon as I get a minute to breathe...

Has anyone else moved so close to having a baby?  What helped you manage the stress, sleeplessness, excitement, & anxiety that comes with so many big changes?

Making People

I have a lot to catch up on, but I have been pretty exhausted making my little person!  I am feeling kicks on a regular basis now, & have even had Braxton Hicks (I think, it's hard to tell what is happening the first time you feel something!).  Squiggle is growing like a weed, & I am beginning to look very pregnant.  Sometimes, I am excited about this.  Other times, I wish I remember what it was like to glance down & see my feet, or to lay flat on my back comfortably, or to fall asleep quickly on my stomach.  Overall, we are very excited & I love feeling our little one getting comfortable!  Here is a photo dump of iPhone/IG pictures...

Serious pizza cravings.  Bear makes the BEST homemade pizza.  I am spoiled!

Fruit is another major staple in my diet these days.  Cannot get enough!

I had a few adorable sessions recently as well, & I cannot wait to share them here!  I posted a few teasers over on my Facebook page.  I am also really motivated to inspire creativity in myself & others for 2013.  Please "like" my page if you are interested in being a part of Creation Resolution 2013!  There is also a contest I am running over there.  If you enter & are not local to Southern Maryland & win the prize, we can work out an alternative to the photo shoot (only for local applicants).  If you just want inspiration to help you have a more creative year, that's great, too!

Thanks for stopping by, I will be back SOON with client work & adorable stories!  I also have a couple tutorials in mind for the near future...

iPhonography: Wedding Edition

Alrighty, so I am still awaiting photos to come back (a few from the photobooth run by Ken Morrill have been posted on his Facebook already!), but in the meantime I decided to share the shamefully few images I managed to take with my iPhone.  Some of the photos were actually pilfered from friends, including Patchie (the photo of me) and my coworker Bonnie (me dancing with LM).

I can't believe it's been two weeks!  Crazy town!

Our Hectic and Awesome Weekend: Sneak Peek!

This past weekend was pretty busy!  We woke up early on Saturday, drove to PA, attended PARF, stayed the night, and drove back on Sunday hitting up a couple vineyards on the way!  Here's a sneak peek in Instagram photos for you...

I'm going to be honest here... the next few weeks may be kinda lame on my blog.  The new semester is starting up, and as I work at a college library, it's our busy time.  Also, since my home internet is practically non-existant, I won't have a lot of time at work to spend doing my own thing online...

Hopefully you'll all stick with me through it and I promise to reward you with lots of fun photos!

iPhone Photo Apps

I know many of you have entered the world of the iPhone as I have, and maybe you are or are not enamoured with it as I am.  As a photographer, I have a few apps I cannot be without!  These apps take my iPhonography from simple mobile phone snapshots to little portable works of art!

Here is my list of must-have iPhone photo apps!

*Instagram.  This little app lets you share a running feed of your on-the-go snapshots with a wonderful lo-fi feel with various filters and a tilt-shift generator.  You can follow other users, hashtag for Twitter, share on Facebook, and interact with those you follow.  People can like your images and comment on them too!  It's a wonderful little app that I use every single day.  Best part?  This app rings up at a very affordable $0.00.

*Lo-mob.  Another way to create dreamy, lo-fi images on your iPhone.  Lo-mob is NOT a free app, but isn't very expensive either.  It also has a ton of helpful tools and gadgets, giving you more control over your final image.

*More Lomo.  Cute, FREE, easy to use.  Just snap a photo in the app and instant lomography gratification.  Super saturated colors and dreamy focus.  Brilliant!

*myPB v2.1.  A photobooth for your pocket.  Nothing is better than that!  Simply choose the orientation of your multi-snaps and click the shutter button.  Pose, change, again, one last time... and you have a cute little digital photostrip.  You can choose black and white or color options, too.  It's such a fun little app!

* moreBeaute2.  This handy app is like carrying an airbrush artist in your pocket.  Took a great image of yourself but hate that your skin looks uneven? This little app can help gloss that over.  I find it is especially helpful with portraits taken with the More Lomo app, which tends to pull out brighter reds in skin tones... not exactly attractive!

* Polarize.  It turns your iPhone into a Polaroid!  Who doesn't love that?!?!?!

*Labelbox.  Add text to your images with Labelbox!  It's free, easy to use, and kinda adorable.

*Project 365.  If you plan on doing a 365 Project but want to keep it really casual, check out this app!  Take one photo every day with the app, and it's plugged into a calendar, creating a grid of images from every day of your year!  You can also import other images if you choose to shoot with another camera or app.  Simply sync up your iPhone and plug in your photo(s) of choice!

I have over three folders of photography related apps, but these are the ones I use the most.  Hopefully some of you will find something useful in this post!

Happy Tuesday!
